The Social Roots of Roma Health Conditions
Karen Plafker
"In many countries, health continues to be viewed as “sickness and medicines” rather than the result of social determinants. A review of the background to the debilitating Roma health situation shows opportunities for systemic intervention, using human rights instruments and other policy tools."

Romani Women - A Priority for European Public Health Policy
Anna Pomykala and Sally Holt
"As the main point of contact between Roma communities and public healthcare systems, Romani women often bear the brunt of discriminatory practices. Yet these same women are best placed to bring healthcare closer to Romani communities."

Roma Health Concerns: The View from Bulgaria
Alexandra Raykova
"In a changing healthcare system, Bulgarian Roma face numerous obstacles to full access, from bad roads to bad habits. As yet no comprehensive policies exist to improve this situation."

Kosovo’s Roma: a Challenge for Public Health
Marta Schaaf
"Kosovar Roma often live far from health centres, lack money to travel and have justifiable fears for their physical security. Improved conditions of public health access are urgent, particularly given UNMIK’s human rights mandate."

They call on the EU Presidency to formally endorse such commitments at the December European Council. The ERPC also remains concerned with the Commission’s response to the census of Roma in Italy.

Round & round with the Roma 2008-09-04 · Budapest Times The Olaszliszka tragedy in 2006 was a clear signal that tensions in Hungary between Roma and non-Roma require immediate attention, the Centre for Fair Political Analysis argues. It also illustrated how the Roma policies of successive governments since 1989 have failed to effectively tackle the problems. What is needed is a paradigm shift, in which the Roma issue is treated as a broad social policy and welfare problem.
