Follow-up projectsBulgariaThe educational system in Bulgaria has faced rapid change in the months since the report on Equal Access to Quality Education for Roma appeared, and they pose a serious challenge to efforts to implement its recommendations. A new budgeting system offers both opportunities and perils, which many of the actors who will carry out the reform are not sufficiently aware of. With that in mind, the Bulgarian partner organisations are undertaking a number of separate advocacy activities. New: Case studies of three village and small town schools: "Bulgarian schools in rural areas in the context of the education reform. What happens to minority students?" (2 April 2009); Report on the presentation of the case studies at an OSI-Sofia/Amalipe round table discussion and press conference (28 April 2009) Hungary - "Come and See", informing the RomaThe Jászsági Polgárjogi Szervezet (JPS) is visiting fourty rural Roma communities in 2008-2009, in order to raise awareness among Roma parents about the importance of quality education, uncover cases of discrimination, and build partnerships between local administrative and civil organisations and the marginalised groups. The findings and recommendations of the Equal Access to Quality Education for Roma report, summarized in a brief brochure, are the basis for the discussions during these "Open Day" activities. A survey is undertaken locally to "frame" the presentation and the dialogue with the community. New: Survey questionnaire now online (24 September 2008) Hungary - Advocating with policymakers and lawmakersThe Chance for Children Foundation will use the Equal Access to Quality Education for Roma report on Hungary to advocate for policy change in the country, liaising with the Parliament's new Subcommittee of Equality and Integration of Schools and the education committee. New: Suggested draft amendments to educational legislation (in Hungarian) now online (14 August 2009) Macedonia - Support equal access to quality education for Roma!In order to challenge the social exclusion of Romani children in education that prevails in Macedonia, and to further the implementation of the Equal Access to Quality Education for Roma report's recommendations, the National Roma Centre (NRC) organised four roundtables. They took place in Skopje and in Prilep and Stip, towns with a high number of Roma. New: Information about follow-up project now online (13 August 2009) Serbia - The Education of Roma Children within Schools for Children with Developmental Difficulties (Research)In Serbia, as elsewhere in the region, the overrepresentation of Roma in the system of special education, especially in schools for children with mental disabilities, has been identified as an endemic problem, notably in the 2007 report on Equal Access to Quality Education for Roma in Serbia. The real extent of the misplacement of Roma children in special schools remains unclear however, due to the lack of sufficient reliable data and in-depth, primary research into the root causes of segregation. A team of researchers will therefore undertake field research and collect primary data at an unprecedented level in order to address this gap. New: Report outline and template now online (20 January 2009) Serbia - Indicators for Monitoring Equal Access to Quality Education for RomaThree years after the Decade of Roma Inclusion (2005-2015) was launched, there is still no methodology for monitoring the results that are achieved in Serbia, since no accurate, measurable indicators were ever developed to analyse the existing situation. This project will develop a set of such indicators on the basis of those used in the EUMAP Serbia report, and integrate them into an overview of the current status of education for Roma. Round tables will be organised to gather additional estimates from experts and representatives of the Roma community. New: Information about follow-up project now online (24 November 2008) SlovakiaGiven the rapid changes occurring in Slovakia, a new monitoring will be carried out to provide an update to the 2007 report on Equal Access to Quality Education for Roma. New: Update monitoring report now online (21 April 2009) |
