Reporter Research analyst/Focus Group Coordinator: Mr. Noel Clycq Background research report In a preliminary phase of the project, completed in October 2007, a series of background research reports was published on the situation of Muslim communities in seven EU countries, based on a comprehensive review of the existing literature (including both literature directly on Muslims and literature on ethnic groups that are predominately Muslim). Read more about the background reports. The background report on Belgium was prepared by Dr Hassan Bousetta and Laure-Anne Bernes of CEDEM - National Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS). It includes a comprehensive annex of all relevant recent literature. Part 1 of the report provides an overview of the size, migration history and ethnic and religious diversity of the Muslim population in Belgium, as well as the experiences of Muslims in terms of discrimination and disadvantage in education, employment, housing, social services, and policing. Part 2 reviews the wider national policy context in which the cities to be monitored will operate, the perception of Muslims and evidence of how they are viewed in wider society, in political discourse and the media. It also includes details of policies and initiatives addressing integration and discrimination, as well as an overview of the administrative structures. Part 3 recommends three or four cities as possible focuses of the monitoring research. In relation to each city, they provide information about the local Muslim population and the political context of the city. |
