Methodology
These background research reports were prepared to serve as a basis for the EUMAP monitoring project Muslims in the EU: Cities Reports. This new monitoring project will result in the publication of a new series of reports in autumn 2009. Although they do not contain original research, these background reports are made public because the wealth of information they contain can be useful to any person doing research on the situation of Muslims in these countries. The papers are based on a comprehensive review of the existing literature on Muslims in the selected countries. It was anticipated that there would be limited literature directly on Muslims as a group. Therefore, researchers were asked to include in their review both literature directly on Muslims, as well as literature on ethnic groups that are predominately Muslim. Each research paper includes a comprehensive annex of relevant recent literature (from 1996 on), whether in English or other languages. ContentsThe Background Reports review and present: Part 1: Research and Literature on Muslims Provides an overview of the size, migration history and ethnic and religious diversity of the Muslim population in that country, as well as the experiences of Muslims in terms of discrimination and disadvantage in the following key areas: education, employment, housing, social services, and policing. Part 2: Policy context Reviews the wider national policy context in which the cities to be monitored will operate, the perception of Muslims and evidence of how they are viewed in wider society, in political discourse and the media. It also includes details of policies and initiatives addressing integration and discrimination, as well as an overview of the administrative structures. This provides a clearer understanding of the role of national, regional, municipal and sub-municipal bodies in relation to the key policy areas for each city. Part 3: City Selection Recommends three or four cities that should be the focus of the actual monitoring. Where appropriate, the reports also identify the neighbourhoods and districts within these cities where there are large populations of Muslims. In relation to each city, they provide information, if available, on the size of the Muslim population, as well as its ethnic and religious diversity and migration history. They also note the political context of the city, the presence of significant Muslim institutions and organisations, as well as any significant incidents that involved or concerned Muslims in the city.
