Across Fading Borders: The Challenges of East-West Migration in the EU

The accession to the EU of twelve new Member States in three years confronted the 'old' Member States with the question whether to open their labour markets to citizens from the new Member States; and these citizens with the question of whether to take the opportunity and establish a new life abroad.

Since then, a debate has erupted about the impact of East-West migration on the countries of destination and origin, and the fate of the migrants themselves. In the meantime, some of the new Member States are now grappling themselves with a new status as immigration countries.

EUMAP invited authors to analyse the impact and background of intra-EU migration. It is pleased to now present a first set of four papers by independent contributors. Read more:

The move comes after the latest report by the EU, which criticised Sofia for delayed judicial reforms, frequent delays in court trials and an outdated penal code.

Under investigation are former PM Nastase and seven former or current ministers. Basescu's request followed an EU report criticising Romania's efforts to fight corruption, especially at high levels.

Segregated Roma communities suffer from insufficient infrastructure, drinking water, sewage systems and waste disposal, leading to unsound living conditions and a devastated environment. There is also a lack of confidence in official institutions, including doctors.

Cordoba Declaration on Intolerance and Discrimination against Muslims 2007-10-10 · Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) The 2007 Cordoba Declaration of the OSCE was issued in the aftermath of the two-day OSCE Chairmanship Conference on Intolerance and Discrimination against Muslims. With the declaration, 56 participating States affirmed that they are responsible for addressing acts of intolerance and discrimination against Muslims. The declaration also called on Muslim communities to engage in their societies and noted that international developments can never justify intolerance and discrimination, including against Muslims.
