Across Fading Borders: The Challenges of East-West Migration in the EU

The accession to the EU of twelve new Member States in three years confronted the 'old' Member States with the question whether to open their labour markets to citizens from the new Member States; and these citizens with the question of whether to take the opportunity and establish a new life abroad.

Since then, a debate has erupted about the impact of East-West migration on the countries of destination and origin, and the fate of the migrants themselves. In the meantime, some of the new Member States are now grappling themselves with a new status as immigration countries.

EUMAP invited authors to analyse the impact and background of intra-EU migration. It is pleased to now present a first set of four papers by independent contributors. Read more:

Natasha Kandic of the Humanitarian Law Center said: "Now the door is open for the arrest of Mladic .. he probably won’t get any more official protection. This government has changed its policy. It’s an historical event."

Croatia wins in Roma pupils case 2008-07-17 · BBC News In a ruling that could affect Roma children across Europe, the ECHR ruled that Croatia did not discriminate against Roma pupils by putting them in separate, all-Roma classes at school. Last year, the ECHR found in favour of Czech Roma who were placed in Roma schools. But it ruled there was no discrimination in this case, because the Croatian pupils were placed in Roma classes within ordinary primary schools.

Canada, Hungary cooperate to prevent massive emigration 2008-07-17 · MTI The Canadian Minister of Immigration held talks with Hungarian government officials on measures to prevent a second migration wave, now that Canada has lifted the visa requirements it imposed in 2001 after large groups of Roma arrived seeking asylum. She said Canada would welcome all tourists and visa-holding workers, but that Hungarians have "practically no chance" of obtaining refugee status.

Move to fingerprint Gypsies reminds many of Italy's darker days 2008-07-03 · Catholic Courier Two months after Berlusconi won elections focused on crime and illegal immigration, the government has announced plans to fingerprint every Gypsy in Italy, including children. Archbishop Marchetto responded with "surprise, unease and sadness," calling the plan blatantly discriminatory. Famiglia Cristiana called it evidence of "creeping racism", likening it to when "Jewish children were identified with the yellow star."

Cordoba Declaration on Intolerance and Discrimination against Muslims 2007-10-10 · Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) The 2007 Cordoba Declaration of the OSCE was issued in the aftermath of the two-day OSCE Chairmanship Conference on Intolerance and Discrimination against Muslims. With the declaration, 56 participating States affirmed that they are responsible for addressing acts of intolerance and discrimination against Muslims. The declaration also called on Muslim communities to engage in their societies and noted that international developments can never justify intolerance and discrimination, including against Muslims.
