The European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA) will host a seminar about the politics and practice of integrating immigrants into European host societies. It will take place on 1-3 December in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The seminar is designed to meet the needs of policy makers and other public officials in the European Union and its partner countries by offering them the required knowledge and skills to effectively identify what makes a good integration policy. In particular, it will enable participants to look at the influence of EU policies and instruments on integration within the Member States, study integration practices in comparative perspective, and discuss the issue of how to assess best practices. The 13th International Metropolis conference will take place from 27 to 31 October 2008 in Bonn, Germany and will focus on Mobility, Integration and Development in a Globalised World. It will be hosted by the Ministry of Intergenerational Affairs, Family, Women and Integration of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia and its partners. The conference will explore the relationships between migration, immigrant integration and development to uncover new aspects of Metropolis' traditional areas of interest, new avenues for research, and areas for policy development. The conference "Beyond East and West: Two Decades of Media Transformation After the Fall of Communism" will be organised by the Center for Media and Communications Studies of the Central European University and will take place in Budapest on 25-27 June 2009. The conference will analyze the state of media and communication research in Central/Eastern Europe after 20 years of transformation. It will provide an opportunity for critically re-examining the social, technological and policy changes in the regional media landscape and for exploring future trajectories of media development. The EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) has launched an open call for tenders to write a comparative report which examines how the right of the Roma with EU citizenship to move freely and reside in the Member States of the European Union is respected, protected and promoted. The aim of the report is to provide EU and national policy makers, agencies and services with assistance in developing effective policy responses to the needs of Roma EU citizens moving to other Member States. The Roma Initiatives Office (RIO) and the Local Government and Public Service Reform Initiative (LGI) of the Open Society Institute (OSI) announce a new initiative targeting the development of policy writing and advocacy skills of Roma NGOs, networks and experts in the countries of the decade of Roma Inclusion. This call is seeking applicants for the English-speaking element of the capacity development programme. Furthermore this programme seeks to include those involved in working directly with Romani women and alumni of the EC Internship programme of the Roma Participantion Programme (OSI). The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS), the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL) and the Peace Palace Library organise a two-day conference in The Hague to mark the 60th anniversary of the Genocide Convention. In an interdisciplinary setting, both historians and lawyers will examine how to achieve a proper balance between the popular perception of genocide and its legal definition, based on the 1948 Convention.
