eumap.org rarely publishes submissions of this length, but Daniela Piana's article aptly takes on the themes of the 2001-2002 EUMAP reports on judicial capacity and independence (reports, further info), following up their findings with new observations, and is therefore published as valuable exception.

August 2006: Spotlight on Monitoring

Monitoring is the main focus of all EUMAP’s activities. Therefore we are always interested to learn from the experiences with monitoring activities of other civil society organisations. This month we present two articles on recent successful monitoring projects, which we hope will inspire other organisations, and provide some useful ideas for improving monitoring techniques and outcomes.

Both projects used recognised European standards as the basis for the monitoring — of the EU and the Council of Europe, respectively. Both involved coordination between a large number of project partners – civil society organisations and individuals with specific expertise.
