Monitoring human rights and the rule of law in Europe

Launched: Coalition for Media Freedom and Integrity. Sign the Declaration On Media and Democracy in Europe!

EUMAP is pleased to announce the creation of a new European NGO coalition whose objective, in line with the recommendations included in the EUMAP/NMP report Television across Europe, is to strengthen the role of the media as a pillar of democracy in Europe. A group of concerned European NGOs, including the Open Society Institute's Media Programme, has launched the Coalition for Media Freedom and Integrity.

The Coalition aims to bring together concerned professional media organizations and civil society groups in Europe. The aim is to create a strong NGO platform that can act vis a vis the European Commission and other European agencies in matters concerning media and democracy. The coalition will act both as a European lobby platform and as a support point for national organisations.

Members of the Coalition would like to invite other European NGOs concerned with media and democracy to join them by signing up to a common Declaration On Media and Democracy in Europe. The declaration outlines issues on which joint action is necessary. Those include strengthening public service values, reinforcing inter-cultural dialogue and promoting media pluralism.

The Declaration is a call on lawmakers, public authorities, media owners, media professionals’ organizations, civil society groups and all other interested parties, to act urgently to achieve specific goals, in particular, the adoption of strategies and implementation of actions which will promote media pluralism.
