Monitoring human rights and the rule of law in Europe

HUNGARY - Television across Europe: Regulation, policy and independence

The television sector in Hungary is marred by excessive politicisation; the public broadcaster MTV is going through a deep identity and financial crisis; the diversity of television programming is limited in both the public and the private sectors; the 1996 Television Act is inadequate and requires urgent and fundamental reform.

These are the main findings of the Hungary country report included in the monitoring series Television across Europe: regulation, policy and independence. The country report was produced by the Open Society Institute (EUMAP and Media Program) in cooperation with the Center for Independent Journalism, and released in Budapest on 9 May 2006. The monitoring series Television across Europe includes a total of twenty country reports. Each report makes concrete recommendations addressed at bringing the television sector into line with international standards, and with citizens’ needs.
