Follow-up action on Television across Europe report in full swing

The Television across Europe: regulation, policy and independence report, carried out under the auspices of the EUMAP and Network Media Programme (NMP) of the Open Society Institute, was launched in Brussels in October 2005. The twenty individual country reports were then translated into the respective countries' language(s), and the overview was translated into 18 languages. There were individual country launches in 17 of the 20 countries covered by the report, which were accompanied by international and national level advocacy campaigns aimed at giving the reports’ findings and conclusions the widest possible audience.

Following these introductions of the report, a conference in Budapest was held, which was attended by most of those involved with the reports’ preparation, including country reporters, the editing team and representatives of partner organisations. They were joined by representatives of other relevant international and national organisations.

The Budapest conference was also the start of new follow-up projects whose aim is to promote the realisation and implementation of the reports' recommendations in the medium-term. The follow-up project is led by the Network Media Programme (NMP).

As first initiative, the NMP formally invited the parties involved in the production of the country reports and other participants in the Budapest conference to submit individual follow-up project proposals.

By mid-October, about a dozen project proposals were received, of which four were chosen for support. The projects, financed by OSI, are currently underway, and will be completed in 2007. Meanwhile, it is expected that a second round of competition will be announced for a further series of follow-up projects.

Update: TV across Europe 2

In March 2007, NMP and EUMAP have launched the international followup monitoring project TV across Europe 2. This monitoring will be carried out to update a selection of the original TV across Europe country reports, as there have been very significant developments in many of the countries since the launch of the original reports. The TV across Europe 2 monitoring includes 10 of the 20 countries included in the original monitoring. It will also serve to keep the respective findings and recommendations on regulation, policy and independence in the public eye.
