The Baltics: Conference on Public Service Broadcasting in the Digital AgeFollowing up on the 2005 TV across Europe monitoring, the Vilnius-based Lithuanian Journalism Centre will hold a one-day regional conference, to include key stakeholders from the Baltic region. The aim of the event will be to discuss the introduction of digitalisation in the three countries of the region. Planned for 19 February 2007, the conference will be open to the public and is likely to gather 50 participants, including representatives from the public service and private broadcasters, regulatory and self-regulatory bodies, media policymakers, broadcasting owners and managers, and representatives from civil society. The conference will tackle issues such as similarities and differences in approaches to the introduction of digitalisation in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania; potential risks and advantages to public service broadcasting and broadcasters posed by digitalisation; and potential new models or sub-models for public service content arising from digitalisation. The conference should be a first step towards developing comprehensive national studies on digitalisation for the Baltic countries. The Lithuanian Journalism Centre was founded in 1995 by the Open Society Fund Lithuania as an independent NGO and has worked since then on journalist education and professionalisation.
