Across Fading Borders: The Challenges of East-West Migration in the EU
The accession to the EU of twelve new Member States in three years confronted the 'old' Member States with the question whether to open their labour markets to citizens from the new Member States; and these citizens with the question of whether to take the opportunity and establish a new life abroad.
Since then, a debate has erupted about the impact of East-West migration on the countries of destination and origin, and the fate of the migrants themselves. In the meantime, some of the new Member States are now grappling themselves with a new status as immigration countries.
EUMAP invited authors to analyse the impact and background of intra-EU migration. It is pleased to now present a first set of four papers by independent contributors. Read more:

Glasgow council leaders pledged to step up the war against slum landlords after the Evening Times revealed how the council shut down a cockroach-infested flat without heating or hot water, where 11 Slovakian Roma lived. Deputy council leader Coleman said hundreds of people, including a large number of Slovakian and Romanian Roma, could be living in similar conditions because of ruthless landlords.

Almost half of all Roma in Serbia live in abject poverty, while 60% have no access to education, the Roma Information Centre says. It says the biggest problems are a lack of state policy and discrimination. 60% of the country’s unemployed are Roma and many of them live in illegal settlements, such as "Carbon City" at the outskirts of Belgrade.

The Hungarian government has been granted a "Certificate for Diversity" from the Netherlands-based Strength in Unity Foundation, for its accomplishments during the first two years of the international "Decade of Roma Inclusion" program.
