Across Fading Borders: The Challenges of East-West Migration in the EU
The accession to the EU of twelve new Member States in three years confronted the 'old' Member States with the question whether to open their labour markets to citizens from the new Member States; and these citizens with the question of whether to take the opportunity and establish a new life abroad.
Since then, a debate has erupted about the impact of East-West migration on the countries of destination and origin, and the fate of the migrants themselves. In the meantime, some of the new Member States are now grappling themselves with a new status as immigration countries.
EUMAP invited authors to analyse the impact and background of intra-EU migration. It is pleased to now present a first set of four papers by independent contributors. Read more:

Terror law used to stop thousands 'just to balance racial statistics'

Thousands of people are being stopped and searched by British police under their counter-terrorism powers – simply to provide a racial balance in official statistics, the government's anti-terror law watchdog has revealed. Moreover, said Lord Carlile, the utility of the section 44 stop and search powers is questionable: "none of the many thousands of searches has ever resulted in a conviction for a terrorism offence."
NIreland church harbors victims of racist attacks

More than a 100 Romanian immigrants in Northern Ireland were spending the night in a church after fleeing their Belfast homes following racist attacks. Some of their homes had been attacked, and earlier in the week there was an attack on an anti-racism rally in support of immigrants. Bottles were hurled and people made Nazi salutes at those taking part.
